A typographic lyric video and visualizer set to Swallow by Joey Cash, made by hand using traditional animation techniques. Graphite, ink, and studio markers on animation paper.
Process
Step 1:
I started by setting the type for each "key" image within the animation.
I first created a template containing rectangular frames in the actual size and proportion of each physical frame of animation. Then, I added my typography and printed out both sheets. I used the printouts as guides for my drawings using a light table.
Step 2: Rough Animation
I traced each of my key frames in pencil, then drew in between frames from scratch using a light table. I also drew the boundaries of each frame according to the correct scale and ratio.
Once the drawings were complete, I scanned in a few rough sequences and composited them into animated gifs, to test out how the movement would play back.
Step 3: Ink and Color
I used studio markers and a variety of black inks to create a cohesive, bright, energetic color pallet. By scribbling the black ink, I channeled the energy and sharpness of the music into a chaotic, yet stylish aesthetic.
Step 4: Compositing
Using Clip Studio Paint EX, an animation and comic software, I composited my animation by aligning each frame on a timeline, in time with the music.
From the same software, I was able to export my animation as the completed music video!
