Using the fundamental elements of point, line, and shape to interpret a living creature in its most essential visual form. Preserving its unique characteristics through the process of graphic translation.
Process
Part 1 - Sketching from reference
Using real images of the animal as reference, I made several quick sketch illustrations, attempting to find the most effective way to communicate the skunk's most recognizable traits.
Part 2 - Vector illustration
Moving to illustrator to refine my sketch into a clean graphic illustration, using a system of proportional curves and angles to create a harmonious geometric form.
Part 3 - "back to the drawing board"
After creating my initial illustration, I found myself dissatisfied with my representation of a skunk. I wanted to find a way to show its elongated body shape and iconic posture.
I returned to the sketch phase and went through the process of illustration once more, leading to the final creature mark.
Part 4 - Typographic Composition
The final part of this project was to create a harmonic composition using typographic and design elements aligned according to the golden ratio.
